The key to a great shopping trip! Or, why are there so many sandwich makers?

Recently on a family shopping trip, I was able to give some essential advice to one of the children as we walked through a clothing store.

“See that man sitting over there who looks bored and half asleep, like he may actually be in a coma? He is our hero. That bench is where we want to be,” I said hoping that I sounded wise and not just lazy. “As an adult, you’re going to spend plenty of time waiting in stores or offices or parks or other places, so you it’s important to either find someplace nice to sit so you can read or daydream or whatever, or you to try to find something interesting to look at.” Continue reading “The key to a great shopping trip! Life lesson 17: Trying to impress people often leads to pain that is slow to wane

As the youngest child in my family while growing up, I often tried to prove myself to my siblings and parents.

Now that I am older and more mature, that trait has only grown stronger and I still find myself taking on various challenges to impress them.

So when I heard recently that a pine tree had blown down in my mom’s yard, I knew that I would need to be the one to remove it. My sister suggested getting someone to cut it up and take away the wood, but I was confident that I could just drag the tree back into the woods.
