It’s time to get outside and exercise! Or is it?

It’s spring and I’m excited about getting outside and getting back into shape!

The weather is beautiful, it feels great to be outside and I have no reason not to jog and exercise more often.

Well, work is a pretty good excuse. It’s been busy lately and I have been tired after some long days. I’m too tired to exercise. Continue reading “It’s time to get outside and exercise! Or is it?”

How are 6 paper towels like 9? Things that annoy me in grocery stores

While I love grocery stores and talk about them way too much, there are also several things about them that annoy me. Here are a few of these items:

What do we call them? – Is it a supermarket, market, grocery store or some other name? Supercenter? Hypermarket? I looked up a few definitions and found that I rarely shop at a grocery store, since those businesses officially only sell food items, while supermarkets sell food and other items. A hypermarket, by the way, combines supermarkets and department stores into one fabulous store that makes you feel hyper because there are too many people around, you can’t find anything (including the family members you came in with) and you don’t remember where you parked.

Paper towels that advertise you are buying “Like 8” rolls when you are only purchasing 6 thick rolls – It’s not “like 8” rolls. It’s 6 rolls! Recently, and I swear this is true, I bought a package of 6 paper towel rolls that are usually ”like 8,” but it had a large “BONUS ROLL” label on it because somehow it was “like 9”, when it was still only 6 rolls. I hate this new math. If I am going to pay for “Like 8” or “Like 9” paper towel rolls, I think I should be able to pay “Like full price.” Continue reading “How are 6 paper towels like 9? Friendly grocery store clerks can make your whole day

It’s funny the impact that someone can make on your life, often without even knowing it.

The grocery store is a great example of this because it’s a place where you are constantly interacting with people you don’t know while you are simultaneously avoiding people you do know because you look terrible (at least that seems to happen to me a lot). Whom would you take with you to Mars?

Scanning through the limited supply of non-political national news over the weekend, I found a few interesting articles about a new NASA-funded study that is part of a project to send people to Mars.

According to the articles (I will paste a few links below), NASA is paying a great deal of money for a study of six people living inside a pod for eight months. The articles brought up several really interesting items, as well as bunch of questions. Here are a few examples: Continue reading “Whom would you take with you to Mars?”

Seeing history and enjoying an epiphany, all for $6

“Hey Dad, Browns tickets are going for $6 or less,” my son Ben said to me a few weeks ago.

He loves the Cleveland Browns and I love saving money, so the cheap tickets were intriguing. Sure there were a few negative points about the game, but they were minimal, such as:

  • The game was going to be played on a cold winter’s day,
  • The Browns were 0-14 at the time and had been playing terribly,
  • The game was set for Christmas Eve,
  • I was supposed to be an usher at my church on Christmas Eve,
  • I would have to get up at 3 a.m. on Christmas Day to drive family members to the airport,
  • We would have to drive more than three hours each way just to sit in the cold and likely watch the Browns lose.

Obviously, that was not enough to keep us from $6 tickets and the opportunity to see the Browns make history with their losing season, so we decided to go. Continue reading “Seeing history and enjoying an epiphany, all for $6”

Holiday vacation lifts spirits and houses, while also creating lasting memories with neighbors

During the holidays, my wife and I each had 10 straight days off of work with no children at home.

After some traveling to see family, we were left with six days of complete freedom and relaxation. It’s the first time we’ve had time together like this, so I thought it would be nice to record a little private diary of our quiet, romantic vacation. A cursory Christmas tale of a reviled parsimonious old man who recanted

While not helping any of the children with their homework this week, I realized that I was pretty lost on most of the words in their vocabulary list.

And while I was definitely not helping them, I looked up several of the definitions and found that many of them seemed to fit with a familiar story. So, in order to help improve my vocabulary and hopefully get an A on some English homework, I present to you this classic Christmas story filled with the words in bold from two recent high school vocabulary lists.

There’s no need for the top sheet! Or tiny bowls!

Like many people, I sleep nearly every day.

And as someone who sleeps, I never really questioned the sheets that were on my bed. I always assumed that I needed the fitted sheet and the top sheet, and that was that.

Recently, though, I read some rather controversial articles that stated that the top sheet really isn’t needed. And now I am led to believe that perhaps that was not that and instead was something else all along.

A few thoughts on Thanksgiving, Franksgiving, parades and cranwords

Thanksgiving 2016 comes at a time when many people are worried about the future and are feeling despair due to the recent events this fall.

But enough about the Cleveland Browns fans.

Meanwhile, the rest the country seems to be either horrified or thrilled with the recent election. But while we have a lot of different opinions and plenty of strife, it’s actually a great time to have Thanksgiving.

We all have plenty to be thankful for, and here are a few items I am thankful for about Thanksgiving.
