Confessions of a bad blogger

I’ve been a bad blogger recently.

It’s not that I’ve written anything bad, upsetting or even too boring, it’s just that I haven’t actually written anything.

So, in order to get back to writing again, I have put together this list of excuses I have for not writing, along with some of the ideas I wanted to write about but then failed at miserably.

Work has been very busy – I realize that it’s hard to believe I’m not rich and famous from writing (yet), but sometimes I need to focus on the job that pays several of the bills. I like the work that I do, and I’m very thankful for my job.

Interviewing for a new job – While I am thankful, I also decided to apply for a related job and thought about it roughly 73 times each day for about three months. I would sit down to write, and then get to thinking about the possibilities of the new job. That made it difficult to focus on the brilliant topics I was coming up with.

One of my brilliant column ideas that I never wrote – O’clock is a weird term – Did you ever think about how odd it is to say 10 o’clock or 12 o’clock? I looked it up and o’clock means “of the clock.” Do we really need to specify that we are referring to the time on the clock? Are there other time systems I am not aware of? Did anyone ever say 10 o’sun dial? Following the same logic, if I am saying the temperature, I should say 72 o’thermometer.

I traveled to see family a few times – It was very nice, but it definitely cut into my writing time. It did give me a few column ideas, and I will hopefully work on some of those soon. Also, the car drove pretty well, even when I had it up to 65 o’speedometer.

I had car problems, too – They weren’t terrible, but they were bad enough that I was obsessing on how to fix the car for quite a while. Because of this, I did not have as much time as I like to obsess over column ideas. My wife figured out how to fix the car today because she is awesome and I assume because she wants me to be able to focus on writing blog posts again.

I cut one of my fingernails too short – It hurt to type with one finger that night, so there was no way I could focus on writing a great column.

Another great column idea that I never wrote – The song “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac is a big lie – I like the song, but the chorus of “Thunder only happens when it’s raining” isn’t true at all. I often hear thunder when it’s not raining. It might be raining far away, but it’s often nice outside where I am at the time. I am also concerned about “when the rain washes you clean you’ll know, you’ll know.” I have never been washed clean by the rain, or if I was, I didn’t know, didn’t know.

I was watching too much television – Come on, it’s been a great time for basketball playoffs, Netflix shows and even Jeopardy. I consider it all research for future columns. I especially like watching channel 31 o’tv.

I got the new job! – I haven’t’ started yet, but I am extremely excited about it. So excited that I have now been obsessing over starting and have not been thinking enough about writing these posts.

I was turned to dust and then only brought back by the events of Avengers: Endgame – This is only partially true. I was thinking way too much about Avengers: Endgame for a while, and it took away some of my thinking about important topics for my blog. So figuratively, my blog turned to dust for a little while. Enough time has passed now, though, that I can focus on this blog again now.

I have missed the blog and have been thinking of ways to improve it – When I was busy with other items and not writing, I certainly missed having this outlet. That being said, I need to spend some time over the next few weeks figuring out how to make a few changes to the blog and to improve it and my writing. My plan is to write regularly again, make a few improvements and have the blog running smoothly in 1 or 2 weeks o’calendar.

      1. We now have to know there is a difference between o’thermometer and o’body heat – otherwise, o’chillfactor. I love that you have a job that pays “several” of the bills. Funny. Maybe turn up the writing time and make money to pay several of the bills that are left. Do that enough and you can pay all of them. 😀

  1. Yes, o’clock was to distinguish between clock time and other ways of telling time… like the sundial. I remembered hearing it recently on the QI podcast and checked it out o’internet.

I did wonder what had happened to you so I am glad to find out none of the things I had imagined actually happened, including the one with the level crossing and the broken down car and the one with the axe murderer.

    1. Thanks! And that’s interesting about the sun dial. I need to look up more information on this now. And I’m also glad that I did not encounter an axe murderer, although I imagine it would have made for an interesting blog post. Top 5 ways to escape from an axe murderer.

  2. Congrats on the new job! I was eating breakfast while reading your column, and when I read the 31 o’tv line, I nearly spit out 2 bites o’oatmeal!

    Glad you’re back!

  3. Think about how they tell time in the military 1300 hours really? I would not last a day that had 1300 hours in it! Congratulations on the new job, I like you have been wondering how to improve my writing as I have at least 10 topics that I have started and realized that they just didn’t make a whole blog, just my random musings when my mind wanders. I know I shouldn’t let it wander by itself but there are times when it gets away from me.

    1. Thanks, and that does seem like a lot of hours. I’m tired after about 8 or 10. Also, I get that way, too, where I have a topic but not enough for a whole post. It’s fun to try to combine topics sometimes. I appreciate your writing and your style, even when your mind gets away from you. Thanks again!
