A trip home leads to some rash decisions

I took a four-hour drive recently, and ended up driving into the past.

The drive was to my mom’s house in Defiance County, Ohio, where I stayed for a few days. One of my brothers was also home for a visit, so it would be a welcome chance to see family.

My mom greeted us as she usually does, with a big hug and a bigger list of items she wanted us to do around the house. Continue reading “A trip home leads to some rash decisions”

It’s hard to trump a trip to Moonville

Long ago when I was a college student, I worked in one of the cafeterias with my friend Bill.

Bill and I were expert grill cleaners and floor moppers who were so intricate with our work that it would take us at least an hour and a half each day to clean one grill and then mop around it. We also spent time in the cafeteria honing our communication and networking skills while multitasking by looking for leftover food that we did not want to go to waste due to our commitment to sustainability. What Pointless Things Do You Lie About?

In life, it is incredibly important to be honest and to be true to yourself.

However, I often find myself lying about movies I haven’t seen, pretending to know how something works, or not letting anyone know my opinions on some pretty mundane topics.

Usually, this is for no good reason except to avoid looking foolish, even though it is certainly more foolish to lie for no good reason. So, in order to clear my conscience, here are the a few things I wouldn’t normally admit. Continue reading “What Pointless Things Do You Lie About?”

The key to a great shopping trip! Or, why are there so many sandwich makers?

Recently on a family shopping trip, I was able to give some essential advice to one of the children as we walked through a clothing store.

“See that man sitting over there who looks bored and half asleep, like he may actually be in a coma? He is our hero. That bench is where we want to be,” I said hoping that I sounded wise and not just lazy. “As an adult, you’re going to spend plenty of time waiting in stores or offices or parks or other places, so you it’s important to either find someplace nice to sit so you can read or daydream or whatever, or you to try to find something interesting to look at.” Continue reading “The key to a great shopping trip! Life lesson 17: Trying to impress people often leads to pain that is slow to wane

As the youngest child in my family while growing up, I often tried to prove myself to my siblings and parents.

Now that I am older and more mature, that trait has only grown stronger and I still find myself taking on various challenges to impress them.

So when I heard recently that a pine tree had blown down in my mom’s yard, I knew that I would need to be the one to remove it. My sister suggested getting someone to cut it up and take away the wood, but I was confident that I could just drag the tree back into the woods.
