Field of Daydreams – Tales of Athens Rec Softball

While most people around Athens know the name Avalanche for its outstanding pizza, Avalanche is also known for its spunky softball team that is often out standing in the outfield on defense while the other teams get hit after hit.

Avalanche Pizza is the lucky sponsor of the plucky co-ed rec softball team that I play on in Athens this year, and the team is one of the most fun squads I have ever been a part of. We are extremely thankful to Avalanche for the sponsorship and guarantee that the prices of their always-tasty pizzas are much lower than my ERA (Earned Run Average). A trip home leads to some rash decisions

I took a four-hour drive recently, and ended up driving into the past.

The drive was to my mom’s house in Defiance County, Ohio, where I stayed for a few days. One of my brothers was also home for a visit, so it would be a welcome chance to see family.

My mom greeted us as she usually does, with a big hug and a bigger list of items she wanted us to do around the house. Continue reading “A trip home leads to some rash decisions”

Supersized sidewalks and a few thoughts about summer in Athens, Ohio

A few random thoughts related to summer in Athens, Ohio

I like the new extra wide sidewalks on West Union Street in Uptown Athens. I’m not sure I completely understand the reasons for them, but they look sweet. I enjoy how they appear modern with the smooth curves, but also historic with the bricks that have been included. They even have benches and super short trashcans that make me feel extra tall while walking. I may take some trash up there just because it looks fun to throw it into those short cans. It’s hard to trump a trip to Moonville

Long ago when I was a college student, I worked in one of the cafeterias with my friend Bill.

Bill and I were expert grill cleaners and floor moppers who were so intricate with our work that it would take us at least an hour and a half each day to clean one grill and then mop around it. We also spent time in the cafeteria honing our communication and networking skills while multitasking by looking for leftover food that we did not want to go to waste due to our commitment to sustainability. What Pointless Things Do You Lie About?

In life, it is incredibly important to be honest and to be true to yourself.

However, I often find myself lying about movies I haven’t seen, pretending to know how something works, or not letting anyone know my opinions on some pretty mundane topics.

Usually, this is for no good reason except to avoid looking foolish, even though it is certainly more foolish to lie for no good reason. So, in order to clear my conscience, here are the a few things I wouldn’t normally admit. Continue reading “What Pointless Things Do You Lie About?”
