Winter is a good time to worry, especially if you are a parent

When I was younger, I couldn’t understand why my father would worry so much about my siblings and me.

If it was snowing and I was working late at the grocery store, for example, he would want me to go straight home after work. He wouldn’t want to worry about me driving to get something to eat or spending time with friends.

It seemed ridiculous to me at the time.

“What is he worried about? I’ve only gotten stuck in the ditch twice due to snow!” I thought to myself. “He just loves watching the weather reports and worrying about the snow.” Continue reading “Winter is a good time to worry, especially if you are a parent”

A few important (to me) rules for the grocery store

Going to the grocery store may seem like a simple exercise, but there are several rules that should be followed in order to make the most of your shopping experience.

If you’re like me (and why wouldn’t you be?), you want to get in and out of the store in a reasonable amount of time while picking up everything you need. I generally make pretty good time in the store, so I thought I should share some of my tips here with you.

I don’t want to brag, but I have been known to shop at speeds as high as 30 aisles per hour! Continue reading “A few important (to me) rules for the grocery store”

Top 5 Reasons This is a Bad Headline (not counting that I don’t actually have five reasons)

Writing headlines can be tricky.

Sometimes I feel like I have the perfect headline to draw readers in, and other times I struggle to find any suitable title so that I can post my article.

Some headlines impeccably encapsulate my eloquent and engaging posts, while others are just a few words thrown together to beg readers to peruse my prose. Continue reading “Top 5 Reasons This is a Bad Headline (not counting that I don’t actually have five reasons)”

Top 5 Winter Annoyances (not counting the cold)

Winter has been tough for many of us already, and parts of the U.S. are now somehow being hit by a Bomb Cyclone, whatever that is.

I  actually like winter at times, but there are certain aspects of the cold weather that I loathe.

The worst aspects are certainly the dangers caused by the frigid temperatures, slippery snow and these terrible storms. In addition, though, there are several other items that cause numerous annoyances for our judges, so we have put together the Top 5 Winter Annoyances (not counting the cold).

New year’s resolutions for my blog

Now that we are two days into 2018, I have put together a few new year’s resolutions for my blog.

I am sharing them here in case any of them are helpful to you, and so that they will be a reminder to me of how I am trying to improve.

Be timely – Don’t wait until two days after the event before posting on topics. I want to post early about upcoming events, but I guess I am already struggling at this one. I will try to do better with this in 2018, or 2019 at the latest. Continue reading “New year’s resolutions for my blog”

A New Year’s Eve to forget

Another big New Year’s Eve is in the books and I am ready for 2018.

This is the year to become rich and famous, hopefully for something good and not for something like being attacked by a Bigfoot that I catch on film or for getting a big settlement after eating some bad ice cream.

No, this is the year to become hugely successful and to capitalize on all of the positives of 2017. It was a great year and it ended with an interesting Dec. 31.

The Last Word on The Last Jedi, a movie that hits all of the high notes

When the biggest movie of the year opened in December, we were lucky enough to get tickets for the Thursday night showing.

And while this review is a little late, I should say that we loved seeing the returning characters mixed with the new stars, we were thrilled by the adventure and special effects, and we became emotional several times. I did think there were a few plot holes, but my love for this movie that has become such an integral part of our pop culture and my family made me able to ignore a few of the problems I had with the story.

But enough about Pitch Perfect 3, I did finally see the new Star Wars movie this weekend and wanted to offer up a few thoughts on this super popular but also somewhat divisive movie. Continue reading “The Last Word on The Last Jedi, a movie that hits all of the high notes”

Sometimes blue is green, or What color do you think this sweatshirt is?

A mysterious thing happened with a Christmas gift this year, and it brought back a debate that has confounded my household for the several years now.

The Christmas gift was a very nice grey sweatshirt with blue lettering that says “Ohio University.” I was fortunate to find this item on sale, so I proudly purchased it and wrapped it for my wife.

On Christmas morning, she unwrapped my present and showed everyone her nice grey sweatshirt with green lettering that says, “Ohio University,” on the front. Continue reading “Sometimes blue is green, or What color do you think this sweatshirt is?”

Top Five Problems with Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – And they have nothing to do with the nose

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is cherished holiday favorite, but the song has several problems that have nothing to do with the nose.

Frankly, the shiny red nose seems plausible to me. If deep sea creatures and fireflies have parts that light up, why couldn’t a reindeer?

No, our judges are concerned by several other parts of the song, so they put together this important list of the Top Five Problems With Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer. Continue reading “Top Five Problems with Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – And they have nothing to do with the nose”

Different reactions to Christmas gifts – Part Two

present twoThis is Part Two of our study of how people react to receiving Christmas gifts.

In order to better understand how people can respond so differently to the same situation, we put together focus groups and presented the exact same scenario to different people and then wrote down their reactions.

Basically, we gave each person a present to see what would happen. So, if it’s not funny or interesting, remember that it’s not my fault because it’s just science. Continue reading “Different reactions to Christmas gifts – Part Two”
