A few items that perplex me as a parent

As a parent, I have watched children conquer physics, learn new languages and reach great academic heights, yet still apparently be clueless about how the dishwasher works.

It is one of the great mysteries of life, and it often baffles me. Do they think the dishes get clean just from setting them in the sink? Why not just put the dishes right into the dishwasher? Do they not realize that you can decipher if the dishwasher is clean or dirty by opening it and looking inside?

We can all learn some important lessons from cereal

I was shopping in the grocery store the other day when I saw something that made me stop faster than the free sample booth.

I was minding my own business in the cereal aisle and thought it was just another ordinary day. Suddenly, though, everything changed when I discovered that the grocery store now has boxes of Lucky Charms Frosted Flakes. It’s all in one cereal!

If we had a holiday to celebrate punctuation marks, would it be Apostrophe’s Day or Apostrophes Day?

Holidays can be very enjoyable, but they can also be extremely confusing.

It’s wonderful to honor parents, heroes, fools and plenty of other people with these special days, but the lack of clarity about how to spell the names and whether or not to use apostrophes drives me crazy. Continue reading “If we had a holiday to celebrate punctuation marks, would it be Apostrophe’s Day or Apostrophes Day?”

A few important (to me) rules for the grocery store

Going to the grocery store may seem like a simple exercise, but there are several rules that should be followed in order to make the most of your shopping experience.

If you’re like me (and why wouldn’t you be?), you want to get in and out of the store in a reasonable amount of time while picking up everything you need. I generally make pretty good time in the store, so I thought I should share some of my tips here with you.

I don’t want to brag, but I have been known to shop at speeds as high as 30 aisles per hour! Continue reading “A few important (to me) rules for the grocery store”

Top Five Problems with Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – And they have nothing to do with the nose

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is cherished holiday favorite, but the song has several problems that have nothing to do with the nose.

Frankly, the shiny red nose seems plausible to me. If deep sea creatures and fireflies have parts that light up, why couldn’t a reindeer?

No, our judges are concerned by several other parts of the song, so they put together this important list of the Top Five Problems With Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer. Continue reading “Top Five Problems with Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – And they have nothing to do with the nose”

Different reactions to Christmas gifts – Part Two

present twoThis is Part Two of our study of how people react to receiving Christmas gifts.

In order to better understand how people can respond so differently to the same situation, we put together focus groups and presented the exact same scenario to different people and then wrote down their reactions.

Basically, we gave each person a present to see what would happen. So, if it’s not funny or interesting, remember that it’s not my fault because it’s just science. Continue reading “Different reactions to Christmas gifts – Part Two”

Christmas presents can result in some very different reactions

I am often amazed at how people can react so differently to the same situation.

In order to study this phenomenon further, we put together focus groups and presented the exact same situations to different people in order to see how they would react.

Today’s study (which is part one if this goes over well), involves presenting a Christmas gift to these different individuals and then studying their reactions. We are listing each individual and quoting their reactions: Continue reading “Christmas presents can result in some very different reactions”

If Every Kiss Begins With K, then should Every Book Begin With Boo? Important questions and comments about the jewelry commercial

Around this time of year, we often hear the Kay Jewelers slogan, “Every Kiss Begins With K” which is either a clever wordplay or a scourge on our senses that is repeated over and over on the television, radio and internet while driving everyone crazy.

I have spent way too much time thinking about the slogan, and have come up with several salient and/or stupid points. Continue reading “If Every Kiss Begins With K, then should Every Book Begin With Boo? Important questions and comments about the jewelry commercial”
